WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Matt Rosendale’s (MT-02) Amendment #57 to the Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement Act and National Defense Authorization of Fiscal Year 2025 passed the House.
Amendment #57 amends Section 1021(b) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 to limit the authority of the U.S. military to indefinitely detain individuals pursuant to the 2001 AUMF, to exclude American citizens from being subject to detention.
“The U.S. military should NOT be able to detain American citizens on U.S. soil! This should solely be up to the FBI, local police, and state law enforcement officials,” said Rep. Rosendale.
“American citizens deserve and are guaranteed due process regardless of their alleged crimes. Due process and the rule of law have enabled our nation to exist for as long as it has. With every news story that breaks, the existence of a two-track justice system becomes more apparent; it is necessary now more than ever to reclaim these legal principles, which are the foundation of justice for our great nation.
“I am glad my colleagues voted to pass my amendment, which would provide a much-needed fix to the unconstitutional Fiscal Year 2012 NDAA.”
